Softball Gets First Win of 2023

April 9, 2023 - - Lorain County Community College softball picked up their first win of the season as they split a doubleheader with the Bryant & Stratton Bobcats in Solon, Ohio on Saturday.

The Commodores led by eight runs, 13-5, in game one but the Bobcats began to chip away, scoring a run in the fifth to ward off the mercy rule, and then scored 10 runs in the sixth and seventh innings combined to come back and take the first game, 15-14.

Faith Hamilton (Grafton, Ohio/Midview HS) pitched for LCCC in game one striking out five batters in 6.1 innings pitched.

LCCC scored five runs in the first by getting three straight walks from Kortlynn Jameson (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria HS), Courtney Keeler (Medina, Ohio/Buckeye HS), and Devin Martin (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville HS)Mariah Kinkoph (LaGrange, Ohio/Keystone HS) singled home Jameson and Keeler to help give LCCC the early five run cushion.

After Bryant & Stratton responded with two runs in the second inning, LCCC added seven in the third.  Beckett doubled that scored a run, Gracie Frey (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion HS) singled home two runs while Keeler and Hamilton each knocked a run in.  Keeler, the ninth batter in the inning, scored on an error by Bryant & Stratton.

Beckett scored on a wild pitch in the fourth while Frey scored her third run of the game in the sixth when Jameson reached base on an error.

In game two, The Commodores edged the Bobcats 9-8 thanks to Keeler scoring on Beckett's base hit in the top of the seventh inning with the Commodores up 8-6.

Much like game one, the Commodores started on the attack to take the early lead.  Two scoring rallies by the Commodores were the product of two players: Hamilton and Madison Pennington (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS).  Hamilton reached base on an error that scored Beckett in the first and then single home Frey and Beckett in the third.  Pennington had a pair of RBI in the first and third as well, scoring Hamilton both times.

With the score tied at six in the sixth inning, Katarina Oudeman (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic HS) led off with a single and advanced to second on an error by Bryant & Stratton's pitcher.  Beckett singled her over to third and later stole second before Frey grounded out to third, scoring Oudeman and giving LCCC the lead. Hamilton singled in the next at bat to score Beckett.

Sydney Leonard (Medina, Ohio/Buckeye HS) picked up the win for LCCC in the second game, going all seven innings with a strikeout.

Softball will travel to Edison State Community College next weekend to take on the Chargers in Piqua, Ohio.
