Commodore Men’s Basketball Wins Third in Row

February 4, 2019 - - Aggressive second-half play on the offensive and defensive ends by Justin Newman (Cincinnati/Robert A. Taft) propelled the Lorain County Community College Men's Basketball team to a 79-70 win over Bryant and Stratton College (OH) to give the third consecutive victory.

LCCC seemingly had the game in hand when the Bobcats made a run in the final few minutes of play to cut the score to 73-70 off a couple defensive rebounds and drives to the bucket, drawing fouls. Newman answered with a key steal and was fouled, sending him to the line for a 1-1, where he converted both.

The Bobcats missed a 3-point attempt and Newman grabbed the defensive rebound then connected on a short-range jumper to give LCCC a 77-70 lead with 30 seconds to play. A Bobcat turnover in the final seconds led to an alley-oop to Jovon Jones (Elyria/F.B.C.S.) and he slammed it home to seal the 79-70 victory.

Coach Marty Egglestrom praised his team, saying, "That was a great, gritty win. We had to work hard for that one and I'm so very proud of our guys."

Newman led all players in scoring with 24 points on a 11-16 night from the field (1-2 from the arc), plus 3-5 at the line. He added 4 steals, 6 boards and 3 assists in the win. Jones grabbed 11 rebounds and had 18 points, including two from downtown.

The win takes the Commodores to 13-9 on the season. LCCC is back at home this Wednesday, February 6, 2019, for an OCCAC conference game against Cuyahoga Community College. Tipoff is at 7:30pm.
